Pilgrims, Indians, and Beer

recently finished reading @mansfieldwrites book “The Search for God and Guinness” Amazed at the way God was able to use a family in such a significant way.

In his book Mansfield accounts an interesting story that I thought would be appropriate to share on Thanksgiving.  here it is…

As startling as this Indian was to the Pilgrims, it was what happened next that shocked them most of all.  The man neared, paused, and then shouted “Welcome!”  in clear, perfect English.  And then, more astonishing still, he asked-again, flawlessly in the Pilgrims’ own tongue-if they had some beer.

Yes Beer.

Mansfield sites Mourt’s Relation and Of Plymouth Plantation as his source.  Though not your traditional Thanksgiving story, I thought this was pretty interesting.  Maybe one more dish to add to your “traditional” Thanksgiving dinner.

disclaimer:  this blog is not intended to promote drinking rather simply recount history.

control or growth

Rick Warren posted this on twitter a few weeks ago and I cant get it out of my head.

“you must decide whether you want control or growth.  Exponential growth by its very nature is uncontrollable.”

I think most people if asked would say that they are not people who control.  The true test of control comes when you have to let go of stuff that you are in control of.  Most times we dont even realize we are controlling something until we have to give up that control.

As leaders we need to always be looking for areas where we can release control so that we can experience growth.  here are some questions for thought.

-do i need to know everything that is happening in the organization?
-do i feel like no one can do the job as good as I can?
-do people in the organization grab the ball and run with ideas or do i need to be in every meeting?
-is there one central table that controls all of the decisions?
-are ideas other than mine praised and welcomed or are they criticized and shut down?
-are ideas shut down because “we already tried that and it didnt work”?
-are meetings dominated by one guy at the top with great ideas or are ideas birthed on a grass roots level without the input of the top leader?

This is all i got for now.  I might add or take away from these questions, but it does help me to gauge how much control i am leading with.

ipray

Tomorrow we launch a new series on prayer.  we are on the verge of wrapping up a 5 month journey through the book of James as we discover what James has to say about prayer.  For the past 5 months or so our youth service has been synced with our morning services, however we have changed the title and design to be a little more youth friendly for each series.  for our prayer series the youth chose to go with P.U.S.H.  (pray until something happens)  our morning service chose to take a page from victory and title our series ipray.

here is one thought as we head into the first week.  God loves to hear our prayers because God loves us.

I think sometimes we forget how great our God is and how much he loves us.  I think we put God in this box where we cant bother God with certain things because He is too busy.  Or maybe we think that God wouldnt bother with our small request when He probably has so much other stuff to deal with.  Another thought might be that if we ask God too many times He might get irritated.  whatever your thought process I would encourage us to remember that God is a god who loves to hear from us.  He loves it when we ask Him for stuff because He loves us.

6On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen;all the day and all the night they shall never be silent.  You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest, 7and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.  Isaiah 62:6-7

welch on vision

each year SEU hosts a leadership forum gathering some fantastic leaders from around the nation.  This past year Jack Welch was interviewed by Bill Hybels, where Jack made a comment that really grabbed me.  This is not a word for word quote, but this is what I took away…

on communicating vision…  ”leaders need to communicate vision until they are absolutely sick of saying it, then at that point the communication has only begun”

I am sure Jack said this much better that I did, but you get the point.  For some of us our vision changes so often we dont even get a chance to say it until we are sick.  For others of us we have so many visions we never get sick of saying the same thing because there are so many things to say.  Some of our visions are stated in a 10 page document so confusing you need a seminary degree to understand it.  I dont know about you, but I definitely have made all of these mistakes.

here are a few questions to think about
-can it be said in one word?
-is there one vision that is repeated EVERY week in your church?
-if a new person walked through the doors are they guaranteed to hear it?
-how many times has the vision changed in the past 5 years?
-have you had to say no to other things to protect this vision?  (if not you probably changed when you should have stayed the course)
-has your vision been so clear it has caused people to leave your church?
-do you have metrics centered around your vision to measure growth?
-if asked would people besides the staff be able to state the vision in one word?

Benaiah’s video

thought I would share this here.  On September 19, 2010 Benaiah celebrated 1 year of life.  Here is a video recapping some of what went down over the past year that we showed at his party.

small groups

There are a bunch of books on small groups and even more people who talk about how they do small groups.  Some people think that the purpose of small groups is to care for the congregation.  some people think that small groups exist to provide a place for Christians to “do life” together.  some people view their small group as a place for bible study.

All of these things are great.  I think they are biblical and serve part of being a christian.  I also think that these ideas toward small groups serve some churches very well.

but…

this is what i think the main purpose of small groups are.  TO MAKE DISCIPLES.  small groups serve as a venue where every believer can reach those that God has placed in their lives.  the goal of a small group should be to see every small group member start their own small group.  As people begin to fall in love with Jesus and respond to the Gospel the response should be a desire to see those in their lives begin to do the same.

the goal is to make disciples not to do small groups.  if some day there is a better way to make disciples i hope we will be smart enough to do that and dump small groups.

Michael Jackson sighting

here is a video i found online.  with halloween a few days away i thought i would share this video of a recent michael jackson sighting from his former residence.

youth ministry thoughts

I have been in the youth ministry game for a little bit now.  Everytime I think I am done with it I am pulled back in.

Dont get me wrong I love working with the next generation.  I definitely know that a church without young people is a church heading to its death.  I am just wondering how effective a 29 year old guy with a wife and kid is at reaching high school people.  I do know that i need to find some 20 somethings who are passionate for Jesus that will help us disciple high schoolers.

If there is a lesson from always being pulled back into youth ministry I think it is that I MUST NEVER forget how important it is to reach a group of people who are flakey, have no money, and dont drive.  One day these people will have families, full time jobs, and be the backbone of the church and society.  This group of people believe it or not will be society one day.

Lord draw the youth of Kapolei.  Let the Gospel be famous here.

satan interviews

Last week we launched a new series called Real Deal.  The big idea behind this series is dispelling myths regarding Christianity, and exposing the Real Deal when it comes to our faith.

To help us better understand some of the misconceptions regarding our faith, we decided to interview the person who is responsible for these misconceptions and myths.  In this exclusive interview we were given some insights into the plans of the most deceitful person the world has ever seen.

check out the interview intro here.

outreach brainstorm session

Problem: How do we create an environment where middle and high school students are excited to be a part of?

This was the problem I put before our youth team last night. While brainstorming we were also able to discuss and clarify that our goal is not to gather a crowd. Our goal is to make disciples. Discipleship however does begin with evangelism, and these activities will hopefully help our young people invite their friends into a relationship with Jesus. We will do anything to reach people as long as it does not go against the bible or distract us from making disciples.

I am not sure when we will do all of these ideas, but I do love the idea of young people getting excited about making disciples.

here is our list. (note: this is a brainstorming session, so all ideas were legal. this does not mean we will do all of these things)
