Easter Plans 2011

Easter is always a pretty busy time for the church. We try our best to build up to Easter empowering our members to be praying for and reaching out to their friends and family. Here is what we got going down at GBCK gearing up for Easter.

March 12: Beverage Blast
Passed out free drinks to people at the parks in Kapolei who were participating in sports.

March 26: Womens lunch outreach
The women of the church invited others and gathered for a time of outreach and fellowship.

April 20: Easter Supplies
We will set up a table after school at Mauka Lani Elementary (the school that we meet at every Sunday) and pass out supplies for parents who want to give Easter baskets to their kids, but might need help providing this for their kids.

April 23: Prayer and Door Hangers
We will walk the community praying and hanging door hangers with plastic easter eggs with candy and small gifts inside. The door hangers will also have an invitation to our Easter services.

church planters needed

If this video gets your blood going you MIGHT be a church planter… trust me though this is much easier listening to on a video, than it is to execute.

hope in His love

but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.  Ps 147:11

The Lord takes pleasure in 2 things.

1.  Fear
Fear is a healthy understanding that we are not God.  We will never be God and this is a good thing.  No matter how great you think you are there will be a day when all of your skills, talent and ability will be worthless.  On that day a God that is greater than us will clearly be a good thing.

2.  Hope in His steadfast love
There is a lot of stuff that we can put our hope in.  Ourselves, our families, our jobs, our bank accounts, our property and possessions, our hobbies, our religion… All of these things as good as they are will let us down someday.  Only His steadfast love will never leave us.

grace

Simon Peter hung out with Jesus for 3 years.  If anyone should have never denied Jesus it would have been Peter.  But Peter in the most critical moment dug out on Jesus.  Peter denied Jesus 3 times.  This kind of fumble on any team would probably land you a secure position on the bench.  You probably wont be the 1st candidate to take over the company.

This is not what Jesus had in mind.  After dying on the cross and coming back to life Jesus was ready and willing to put Peter back in the game.  Not only was Peter back in the game, Peter became one of the key players in Gods plan to save the world.

Not many of this would have reacted to Peter like this, but I guess that is the difference between us and God.  God understands grace.  God doesnt see things the same way as us.  I dont know about you, but I am sure glad that even though I fall short, God still chooses to give me a second chance.

People will always let us down, it is up to us to continue to choose to believe that God has a plan for these people.

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”  John 21:17-18

It’s been a while since I last posted one of these.  Too much to catch yall up with everything happening at GBCK, but let me roll out some thoughts…

-Christmas eve service was a hit.  It always feels good to pack out a room.  Tons of new people exposed to Jesus.

-1 Service sunday is my favorite service of the year

-great time with our volunteers at our volunteer appreciation lunch last sunday.  definitely love our volunteers

-God moving in big ways in the lives of people in our church… Praying and asking for prayer for these guys.

-launched a new series today.  Be One, Make One.

-realized today we made a bunch of big time improvements to our facility last year

-bunch of people stepping up and saying they want to start new small groups.  gotta love discipleship.

-youth encounter weekend was powerful.  amazed at how much our youth is growing in Jesus.

-excited for seek week happening at the end of January.

-OUR PLAN FOR 2011:  SAME PLAN AS 2010.  MAKE DISCIPLES.

1 service Sunday

One of my favorite services of the year is definitely the 1 time a year that we scale things down to give our volunteers a break. The idea is to bring the 2 services together, and scale down the set up to what is absolutely necessary.  No kids ministry, no road signs, no hospitality.  We have a scaled down worship and a preacher, and that is about it.

Many pastors would consider this suicide.  Loss of tithes, loss of momentum and a bunch of other concerns most pastors have. For me I think it is a gain.  Gain of time to simplify and focus on Jesus and relationships.  Gain of filling up the tank of the volunteers.  Gain of showing our hard working volunteers that we value them more than the task.  Gain of fighting against that internal drive every pastor has to grow their church.

not that good

Success in ministry is easy to feel good about.  To be apart of what God is doing is definitely an honor.

The challenge is remembering that this success really has little to do with us and a lot to do with God.  Despite our brilliant strategies and ministry skills God is the one who should and needs to get the credit.  God is the one who has given us the skills and abilities.  God is the one who deserves glory.

Although this might seem like an obvious thought, if you are anything like me you forget this on a regular basis.

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,  2 Cor 3:5

the tree

20 years from now there are certain family moments that I hope we will remember as a family.  Our hope is that one of these moments will be the traditions that we live out every year around christmas time.  This year we started a tradition of setting up and decorating the Christmas tree.  Although Ben might not remember this year, as we continue to do this we hope that the value of family, working together, and quality time becomes a part of who he is.

1 spider, 1 hour, and 5 attempts later we have a straight tree.

xchange halloween

This past Halloween our youth team threw a party in an effort to reach out to their friends.  Understanding that the first step to discipleship is evangelism our team did a great job of engaging those far from Christ.

Check out some pictures from the party.
